Tigers closer Jose Valverde entered the ninth inning of Saturday's game against the Yankees with the responsibility of protecting a one-run lead. The erratic right-hander was just as Valverdian as ever, blowing the save without surrendering a hit. He managed to do that by hitting two batters, walking two others, and allowing three stolen bases while only throwing 13 of his 29 pitches for strikes.
And because of a game-winning sacrifice fly by Omir Santos in the bottom of the inning, Valverde earned the win. Because of all the players who could've been given the credit for Detroit's victory on Saturday, Jose Valverde is the most deserving.
