Phillies ace Cliff Lee departed his Friday start against the Marlins with two outs in the fifth, having allowed six runs on ten hits. Which means we enter July with Lee somehow winless in his 14 starts despite a respectable 4.13 ERA.
In recognition of this statistically quirky phenomenon, here's another collection of pitchers with more wins than Cliff Lee, each one ranging from mediocre to maligned to miserable.
Clay Buchholz (8 wins, 5.53 ERA)
Christian Friedrich (4 wins, 5.86 ERA)
Nick Blackburn (4 wins, 7.74 ERA)
Mike Minor (3 wins, 6.14 ERA)
Philip Humber (3 wins, 6.01 ERA)
Jake Arrieta (3 wins, 5.81 ERA)
Tommy Hunter (3 wins, 5.67 ERA)
Tim Lincecum (3 wins, 5.60 ERA)
Jason Marquis (3 wins, 5.83 ERA)
Tyson Ross (2 wins, 6.35 ERA)
Randy Wolf (2 wins, 5.78 ERA)
Hector Noesi (2 wins, 5.50 ERA)
Chris Davis (He's a position player, and has a win.)
Jeff Mathis (A catcher. One win. Seriously.)
Apparently, they're handing wins out like candy this year. Cliff Lee just hasn't been able to get in on the action.
