Chalk prevailed in all contests as eight teams advanced to the Sweet Sixteen.
Kentucky and Syracuse make it look easy: They're #1 seeds for a reason. Kentucky blew by #8 Iowa State and the impressive play of Marquis Teague (24 points, 7 assists) was extremely encouraging. Syracuse scored 50 points in the second half against #8 Kansas State to advance as well. The top seeds will face much stiffer challenges in the next round though--Kentucky gets #4 Indiana, one of only two teams to beat the Wildcats this season, and the Orange may have a difficult time against #4 Wisconsin.
Big day for the Big 10: Michigan was eliminated on Friday, but every other team from the elite conference is still alive. #4 Wisconsin held the country's best shooter, John Jenkins, to 3-of-13 from the field in the Badgers' 60-57 win over red-hot Vanderbilt. Two-seed Ohio State held off #7 Gonzaga in the Midwest Region, 73-66, behind Aaron Craft's first career double-double. And #4 Indiana advanced to its first Sweet Sixteen in a decade by surviving 22 turnovers against VCU. Purdue and Michigan State will try to continue the Big 10's success on Sunday.
The Big East rolls, too: With Syracuse, Marquette, and Louisville all advancing to the Sweet Sixteen, the Big East went a perfect 3-0. Cincinnati, South Florida, and Georgetown will try to join their fellow Big East members in the next round on Sunday against Florida State, Ohio, and N.C. State.
The Brady Heslip Show: Baylor's formidable frontcourt deserves a lot of credit for the Bears' achievements this season, but on Saturday it was Brady Heslip who carried his team to the finish line. Heslip made nine three-pointers on his twelve attempts, racking up 27 points to lead all scorers in Baylor's 80-63 defeat of #11 Colorado. Heslip's partner in the backcourt, Pierre Jackson, added 15 points and 10 assists. Baylor will face whomever emerges from the unlikely Xavier-Lehigh pairing.
